Let’s hear it for January! New year and new stuff – everywhere. The holiday season brings with it an influx of new things that we either need to store away or organize into our homes. Did you add more Christmas decor, kids get new toys? You’re not alone! Here are a few ways to keep clutter reduced and create a space of function.
1. Out with the old!
Literally, get rid of old things. Whether it’s toys, clothes, shoes, throw pillows and blankets, holiday decor – doesn’t matter. If you’ve upgraded any of your old things, or simply find yourself with too much of some, leaving them un-utilized, consider purging the old. Children out grow toys, clothes and shoes regularly. If you don’t have any friends or family members you can pass these things along to, find a local shelter, church, or organization that takes these specific items. It’s a good idea to call or stop by the place you are considering donating to first to ask them if they will accept your items. Many times people drop off and leave and organizations are left having to find a place that can actually take the items or simply have to throw them out. Also, don’t donate junk. Take the time to throw away your trash. Lot’s of families are in need but they do not need broken or severely worn items. Now let’s get organizing! I’m a huge fan of baskets, shelves and storage containers that can easily be put away and identified. Fill baskets with toys, pillows, throw blankets. Tuck them next to the couch, or bed. You can even place them on shelves and in closets. The best part is, everything gets a home and if you (or your children) are not the neatest of people, baskets and storage bins provide a decorative hiding place. From toys to craft supplies, linked below are a some of my favorite ways to store the items you decide to keep.

2. Store your seasonal things in an easy to identify way.
If you don’t already own seasonal storage bins, consider investing in them now. It will save you a lot of time, effort, and money in the long run. I know we all love to put up seasonal decor but we rarely enjoy taking it down. Putting it away the right way keeps your items alive for another year! Here are some staple seasonal storage items you won’t regret buying.

3. Baskets are perfect for decluttering targeted spaces.
Throw blankets, pillows, books; all of these an more make great accent pieces around the house. If you are like my family, there’s always a stack of board games on or under something in the living room, or a blanket or pillow tossed on the floor. What’s the solution? Get a basket! Baskets slide easily under tables, into corners, and onto shelves.
