You are that girl. Proverbs 31

The Proverbs 31 woman is often described as this picture of perfection, the never-idle homemaker. Many use this passage of scripture to describe the ideal woman. She’s always busy with things that need tending to for everyone else but there is so much more that is revealed to us in Proverbs 31. In fact, it’s misrepresented so often, many women often see the Proverbs 31 woman as this unattainable description of perfection. The scripture actually starts by addressing men! In it’s entirety, it gives wisdom passed down from the mother of a king (written by the king) with guidance on how a man’s character and time should be cultivated and spent. If this is the first time you’ve heard this, just take a look; I’m not making it up – Proverbs 31: 1-9

The guidance is specific – find a godly woman, marry her, cherish her, don’t waste your time drinking yourself into a fog, be just, speak up for those with no voice, and serve others. It does NOT say, be any old body, and find this perfect woman who should always be perfect and do all the things, all the time, with no regard for your character. A man should be just as honorable and diligent in walking with Christ as the woman illustrated in Proverbs 31 is.

So let’s clear the air.

She is not this picture of perfection. She is a woman who walks with and seeks God by design. He has crafted us to be who we innately are. That does not mean we cannot do other things. Realistically, that means that everything we do should complement God’s design (His order). Not hinder, but compliment. Often, this passage of scripture is used to tell women they should not work or spend time outside of the home. It’s used to make women feel guilty or ashamed of desiring to take time for themselves, do work they are passionate about, and even be honored and recognized for what she does inside and outside the home. So, here’s the clarity – Proverbs 31:28-31, “Her children arise and call her blessed…”. The first thing worth mentioning here is that this directly means her children recognize and praise her work. They give her honor and recognition! The next is that verse 28 doesn’t stop with the children. It says, “…her husband also, AND he praises her”. Keep reading through verse 31; it gets better! We often gloss over the fact that scripture tells us that the woman who fears the lord is to be praised and honored for all that her hands have done! I’m not making it up; that’s the word.

You are who He says you are

You are the treasure! The Proverbs 31 woman, described in the Bible, is often admired for her multifaceted and virtuous qualities. She is portrayed as industrious, managing her household with diligence and skill. Though true, this doesn’t mean things are always perfect. Her strength and dignity are emphasized, and she is praised for her resourcefulness in various aspects of life, including business and home. The Proverbs 31 woman is known for her wisdom, generosity, and fear of the Lord, embodying a model of virtue and dedication. She aims to please God and live by His order. Her character serves as an inspirational example of a well-rounded and capable woman who doesn’t fall prey to unproductive idle time. She cares for others and her community and they hold her in high regard! When you think you don’t or can’t measure up to these characteristics, think again. Start by finding yourself worthy. You may find it hard at times, that’s ok! She is always within you. Find your people who call her out and hold her up. Surround yourself with those who also seek to walk by the standards of God. Teach your children what honor looks like in how you care for others. And last but not least, who you partner with is important! Don’t sleep on yourself.

Whether you are single, married or otherwise; a mother, leader in your community or prefer to be behind the scenes – you are that girl! It is you, by design. Embrace the characteristics of who God has designed you to be – the nature of the woman in Proverbs 31. My prayer is that as you do this, those on the receiving end also embody Proverbs 31 and rise up to honor your character and commitment and bless you!

Happy New Year!
